WE'RE CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS, except...

...for really well-written speculative short stories and flash fiction about the future of publishing. No essays, please. From 500 to 5000 words.

What does the future hold for writers, for publishers, for readers?

When we have enough quality stories (in our opinion), we'll publish a collection.

We won't pay for each story, but the authors of the stories we accept will share equally in the royalties. We doubt you'll get rich, but if you care about what's happening in publishing these days, let your creative mind imagine what might happen in the future.

Leslie Hall Pinder's BRING ME ONE OF EVERYTHING garners a STARRED Publishers Weekly Review

Since Leslie's latest novel received its starred review, sales of her first, UNDER THE HOUSE, have benefited, too, proving the conventional wisdom that productive and talented authors gain fans the more they write and publish. Congratulations, Leslie.

Our first Audio Book recording is in progress

Shelfstealers is thrilled to welcome Father Marc Powell as our first, confirmed volunteer to our Clear Eye Books program. He'll be recording the audio book for JOE PEACE by Kerry Dunn. Father Marc is a Catholic priest/actor/writer from Seattle, WA, who adapts novels and short stories into stage and radio plays. His most recent stage adaptation of author Ron Hansen's New York Times bestselling novel 'Atticus' premiered in 2011 at the Blue Heron Arts Center on Vashon Island, WA. His one-act stage adaptations of bestselling author Susan Vreeland's short stories 'The Cure' and 'Uncommon Clay' also premiered at the Blue Heron. He has acted in numerous roles in stage productions throughout Washington state and California, including in Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing' as Don Jon, in Jean Anouilh's 'Antigone' as the Choragus, and in Daniel Sullivan's 'Inspecting Carol' as Walter. He is currently in pre-production on two radio play adaptations by California crime-noir author Simon Wood and Alaskan author Mary-Beth Holleman. He is pastor of a small 200-family parish on Vashon Island, about half an hour by boat from downtown Seattle. Before ordination, he worked as a newspaper reporter for 'The News Tribune' in Tacoma, WA. JOE PEACE is Fr. Marc's first audio book performance for Shelfstealers, but we hope he'll be interested in volunteering his time - and his amazing reading and acting skills - to future projects. Through the kindness of people like Fr. Marc, Shelfstealers is able to donate audio books by our talented authors to organizations throughout the world who serve people with visual disabilities.

Our first four authors were in Mexico

Shelfstealers is honored to be one of the lead sponsors for the 2012 San Miguel Writers' Conference. We believe talented authors deserve the blessing of a legitimate publisher, one that doesn’t charge fees, offers a 50/50 split, helps authors to make their projects the best they can be, and markets their books so that they have a chance at finding their audiences. On the ‘eve’ of releasing our first four books at the conference on February 16, we are confident these books are good books. They might even be great books. Certainly, the preliminary reviews and blurbs from Margaret Atwood, Publishers Weekly, Alan Cheuse, Don McLean and others bolster our faith in our choices. On Saturday, February 18, at breakfast, Leslie Hall Pinder read from UNDER THE HOUSE and BRING ME ONE OF EVERYTHING, both literary novels. Margaret Atwood says Leslie is “a writer of great talent and sensitivity.” We're sure you'll agree. Also on the Saturday, George S. Whiteman read from the first of his three-part Jesters' Court series, THE PERENNIAL FRESHMAN, a coming-of-age memoir that will make you laugh. We certainly did. Don McLean, singer/songwriter of 'American Pie' fame says, “...George's writing is as creative and scintillating as the rest of his talents and personality.” At breakfast on Sunday, February 19, Ellen Herbert read from her collection of award-winning stories, FALLING WOMEN and Other Stories. Alan Cheuse of NPR's 'All Things Considered' says, “...By turns, appealing, worrisome, full of sighs, full of cheer, these stories remain always true to life.” Also on the Sunday, Kerry Dunn (no relation, although I'd adopt him in a minute) read from his noir crime novel, JOE PEACE, a semi-finalist in the 2009 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest, and about which Publishers Weekly says, “...an exciting gang story and a heartbreaking tale of relationships.” We gave away print versions of each book, and T-shirts you might even wear! With over 3 million new books hitting the market in 2011, over 80,000 publishing companies in the US alone, and Goldman Sachs saying that no one should invest in the publishing business right now because the ground is shifting too rapidly, the question, “Is a great book enough?” weighs heavily on my mind as the Chief Thief/CEO of Shelfstealers. But it weighs on my heart, too. It weighs on my heart because I feel a moral obligation to the authors who have entrusted us with their work. Their talent humbles me. I have fallen in love with them and their books. We hope you will, too.
